How Google (Search Engine) Works?
Google, a search engine, is a software system that helps you find information on the internet.
Think of it as a giant librarian for the web. When you ask it a question (called a search query), it looks through trillions of web pages and brings you the most relevant results. YouTube is the second most popular search engine across the world after Google.
Search Engine Works in Three Steps:
1. Step-I: Crawling (Finding the Pages): Search engines use special software programs called crawlers or spiders. These crawlers visit websites all over the internet and look at every page, just like flipping through the pages of a book. When a crawler discovers a new website or page, it records the information.
2. Step-II: Indexing: Storing the Information: After crawling, the search engine saves important information about each page in a giant database. This is called the index like a huge library catalogue. The index stores details like: What the page is about? The keywords it contains. Images, videos, and links on the page. This helps the search engine understand what each page is really about.
3. Step-III: Ranking (Showing the Best Results): When you search for something, the search engine quickly looks through its index to find the most relevant pages. Then it ranks them, putting the best matches at the top of your search results. Ranking is based on many factors, like:
- The words you used in your search
- The quality and trustworthiness of the page
- How many other websites link to it
- How fast and mobile-friendly the page is
The better a page meets these factors, the higher it shows up in the search results.
Example:
Letβs say you search for βhow to make tea.β
- The search engine looks in its index for pages that talk about making tea.
- It finds thousands of results but ranks the most helpful and trustworthy ones on top.
- Within a second, it shows you a list of websites with recipes, videos, or blogs, all about making tea.
Why is it Important to Know How a Search Engine Works
If you own a website or a blog, understanding how search engines work is the first step in SEO. Your goal is to help search engines:
- find your site (crawling),
- understand your content (indexing), and
- show it to people at the right time (ranking).
This calls for understanding how the search engine works.
